Chapter Eleven

“Sean!” Two little girls chanted his name in unison as he walked into Amy’s house, doing more to settle the whirling commotion inside him than lying on his bed and staring at the ceiling had.

He gathered up his tiny nieces into his arms. “How’re my girls?”

“Walker pooped in the tub!” almost-four-year-old Lexi informed Sean with a disgusted scrunch of her nose.

“Boys are dross,” two-year-old Mia agreed with a solemn nod.

“Does your mom need help?” he asked. Sure, poop-cleaning duty could be really “dross,” but that would go a long way in taking his mind off the confusion Victoria had injected into him.

“Emma’s here,” Lexi said as an explanation.

“Amy?” Sean called up the stairs anyway. “Need help with anything?”

She came into view on the landing, six-month-old Walker on her hip. “It’s like my siblings think I can’t mother by myself.” She made a face. “What are you doing here? Dinner was forever ago.”

“I’ve eaten.” He shrugged.

Amy smirked at him. “Lonely?”

Sean shouldn’t have hesitated, and he knew it the minute curiosity exploded on Amy’s face. “Sure, yeah,” he said, but it was too late.

“Is it that girl?” Amy hurried the rest of the way down the stairs. Emma was behind her and followed her down, scooping Walker out of Amy’s arms.

“What girl?” Emma asked.

Sean nodded to his nieces instead of answering. “Do they need pajamas or something, Amy? It looks like Walker’s ready for bed.”

“No, no!” both girls protested.

“We want to play with you,” Lexi said. “Mom, can we play Mario Kart with Uncle Sean?”

“For fifteen minutes,” Amy said and, with a grin, added, “If Uncle Sean tells me about . . . what’s her name again?”

“Oh. Right. Victoria,” Emma supplied from where she sat in Amy’s huge rocker recliner. She had Walker wrapped up tight in one of his fuzzy blankets, and already his little eyes drooped closed—though he kept staring up at Emma.

“Traitor,” Sean shot at her. She glanced at him and smiled but then turned her attention back to Walker. Emma cherished every single second with any of her nieces and nephews. Sean dropped the girls back onto the floor and let them lead him to the flat-screen TV, where he took a seat on the carpet while Lexi set the game up.

Amy sat on the only other piece of furniture in the living room, a blue couch, exhaustion showing in her own drooping eyes. Wes’s deployment and doing everything on her own took it out of her, even though Emma helped as often as she could and Amy’s mother-in-law took the older girls a lot too. And, of course, Sean tried to help.

“So, what’s going on?” she asked.

“Where’s Cole?” Sean asked Emma, still avoiding answering. Lexi shoved a wheel into his hands, and he turned his attention to the TV.

“Playing basketball,” Emma said in a low voice.

“Nice of him to invite me,” Sean muttered, and Emma chuckled softly.

“Oh, come on.” Amy scowled at Sean. “Quit acting like you have squirrels in your pants and just tell me about her.
